Scholarships

ASH Endowments, Funds & Scholarships:

  • The income and principal of the fourteen endowment funds and one current use account of the Alumnae Scholarship Housing Program are used for the designated purposes.
  • These accounts are maintained by The Ohio State University Development and the Alumni Association, Inc., at the discretion of the ASH Advisory Board. All of these funds have the organization number of #85859.
  • Established in 2003-2004, two (2) “full housing” scholarships were awarded per house.  Today, we award as many as we can, from our various ASH endowments, to women who live in the program and meet the scholarship requirements.  No longer are awards house specific.

Est. 1954 – Alumnae Scholarship House Gift Fund #305032

This “current use” account does not earn interest. This account is for miscellaneous expenses which are not covered by other accounts. These expenses include the Fall Welcome reception, food items for the Women of the Year reception, ASH Advisory Board meeting set-up, printing and mailing costs.  This fund was originally established with undesignated gifts from alumnae, which were first deposited into the Development Fund in 1954.

Est. 1953-Dorothy Evans Lewis Memorial Endowment Fund #204163, Original Gift $2.000

For the purchase of books, magazine subscriptions, periodicals, theatre/concert tickets, and other forms of cultural advancement, as well as the purchase and engraving of Women of the Year charms and plaque.  Established December 14, 1953, this fund was provided by gifts in memory of Dorothy Evans Lewis (M.A., Zoology, ’19).

CULTURAL FUND REIMBURSEMENTS

Beginning in the 2010-2011 academic year, the cultural fund began operating in a different way.  Residents and resident advisors of the ASH program will present proposals to the hall senior staff to request the use of these cultural funds.  Senior staff will in turn present these proposals to the ASH Board at Advisory Board meetings.  Typically these funds have been used for house magazines and the spring trip.

Est. 1954-LUCY-LELIA SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT FUND #204352, Original Gift $8,000

to provide scholarships for women participating in the ASH Program.  On July 26, 1954, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley H. Hanley established this scholarship in memory of Mr. Hanley’s mother, Lucy Hanley, and Mrs. Hanley’s mother, Lelia Davisson.

To qualify for the Lucy-Lelia Scholarship a student must:

  • Be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at The Ohio State University.
  • Be a resident in the ASH Program for a minimum of two quarters, including the current quarter.
  • Maintain a minimum 2.8 grade point average.
  • Demonstrate financial need, based on her completed Application for Freshman Admission, Scholarships, and Financial Aid and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Total Award Amount: $500/Academic Year (divided into three equal disbursements for autumn, winter and spring quarters.

Est. 1966 – JOSEPHINE SITTERLE FAILER ENDOWMENT FUND #202116, Original Gift –$ 2,700

To provide ASH residents, who have been elected to University recognized honoraries, with funds for membership fees and pins. A gift from Josephine Sitterle Failer (B.S., Pharmacy, ’39) opened this account on December 8, 1966.

 FAILER HONORARY FUND REIMBURSEMENTS

The ASH Advisory Board regulates disbursement of the annual income.  When the income is unused, it is the Advisory Board’s responsibility to insure the money does not lie idle.

To receive reimbursement for honoraries, a student must:

  • Complete the Honorary Reimbursement Form, which can be obtained on from the ASH Guidebook
  • Submit the completed form by June 1 to the Finance Office at The Ohio State University.
  • If necessary, the funds will be mailed during the summer to recipient’s address designated on her reimbursement form.

Est. 1975- EDWARD AND HAZEL STEPHENSON ENDOWMENT FUND #526956, Original Gift $26,000

The income and/or principal is for scholarship house purposes (furnishins, etc.)  Established April 4, 1975 with a bequest from Hazel Stephenson

Est. 1977- HELEN HOSFORD ENDOWMENT FUND #203298, Original Gift $100,000

for the improvement of the current ASH House or purchase of additional property.  A bequest from Helen H. Hosford (B.S., Social Service, ’20) opened this account on February 4, 1977.

Est. 1978 – FRANCES E. JONES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT FUND #203479, Original Gift $17,976.09

To provide scholarships for women participating in the Ash Program.  The ASH Advisory Board establishes the criteria for this scholarship.  This account was established on April 7, 1978 with a bequest from Frances E. Jones (B.A., Arts & Sciences, ’27; M.A., English, ’28).

To qualify for the Frances E. Jones Scholarship a student must:

  • Be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at The Ohio State University.
  • Be a resident in the ASH Program for a minimum of two quarters, including the current quarter.
  • Maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average.
  • Demonstrate financial need, based on her completed Application for Freshman Admission, Scholarships, and Financial Aid and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Total award amount: $500/academic year-divided into 3 equal disbursements for autumn, winter & spring quarter.

1985 – ANNIVERSARY ENDOWMENT FUND #200228, Original Gift $12,283.80

To provide scholarships for women participating in the ASH Program.  In honor of the 50th Anniversary of the program, this fund was established in 1985 with gifts from Alumnae. The ASH Board transferred $4,738.00 in order to establish the endowment.

To qualify for the Anniversary Scholarship a student must:

  • Be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at The Ohio State University.
  • Be a resident in the ASH Program for a minimum of two quarters, including the current quarter.
    • Maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average.
    • Demonstrate financial need, based on her completed Application for Freshman Admission, Scholarships, and Financial Aid and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Total award amount: $500/academic year divided into 3 equal disbursements for autumn, winter & spring quarter. First Recipients in 2005-06: Tawnee Garcia, Elizabeth Hunt, Silvia Mata, Mindy Yiu

Est. 1989 – SPEER, M.C & W.R. FUND #606855, Original Gift $10,792.82

Established July 7, 1989, the Ash Advisory Board voted to add $4,207.18 to the gift in order to establish an endowment. At the time $15,000 was needed to qualify as an endowment which would earn interest. The monies are to be used to benefit the ASH Program and the purposed expansion of the ASH House, formerly known as the Ann Tweedale House/ and the Grace Walker House, now known as The Fechko House.

Est. 1994 – EILEEN BROWN COLE GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP FUND #241367, Original Gift $15,000

to provide scholarships for female graduate or professional students, who as an undergraduate participated for at least one school year in the ASH Program.  The ASH Advisory Board establishes the criteria for this scholarship.  A gift from Eileen Brown Cole opened this account on April 8, 1994.

To qualify for the Eileen Brown Cole Graduate and Professional Student Scholarship, a woman must:

  • Be enrolled as a full-time graduate or professional student at The Ohio State University.
  • Have been a resident in the ASH Program as an undergraduate for a minimum of one academic year.
  • Maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average.
  • Demonstrate financial need, based on her completed Application for Freshman Admission, Scholarships, and Financial Aid and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

 Total award amount: $1000/academic year divided into 3equal disbursements for autumn, winter and spring quarters.

Est. 1995 – JAMES J. CONN, M.D. AND VIRGINIA STARBUCK CONN ENDOWMENT FUND #201423, Original Gift $15,000

For renovation or construction of Alumnae Scholarship House(s), including the support of fundraising for such activities.  Established on April 7, 1995, this account was provided by gifts from James J. Conn, M.D. (B.A., Biological Sciences ’38; M.D., ’43) and Virginia Starbuck Conn (B.A., Arts & Sciences, and B.S., Education ’38; M.A., ’42), who was a member of the ASH Advisory Board.

Est. 1997 –  ALUMNAE SCHOLARSHIP HOUSING RESIDENTS FUND  #240132, Original Gift $25,000

The annual income shall be used to provide funds for current financial needs of residents, and/or for capital improvements, for equipment or for furnishings of ASH.  This fund was established on September 5, 1997 with gifts from Ruth Deacon (B.S.H.E. ’44) and her sister, Helen Deacon Swank (B.S.Ed. ’53; MA Music ’66).  The donors encourage cash and deferred commitments from other former residents and friends of ASH.

Est. 2000 – RUTH FECHKO ALUMNAE SCHOLARSHIP HOUSE FUND #211740, Original Gift $26,088

The annual distribution from this fund shall be used to support Alumnae Scholarship House purposes as determined by the board of the Alumnae Scholarship House.

Est. 2006 – VIRGIL L. HESKETT & ADNELLE HARVEY HESKETT AND GENE HARVEY HESKETT & KATHLEEN B. HESKETT SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT FUND #263162, Original Gift $25,000

To provide one or more scholarships to worthy participants or past residents of the Alumnae Scholarship House Program (ASH) or its successor program. First preference is for current ASH program residents. Second preference is for previous ASH residents who are enrolled in professional or graduate programs on the Columbus campus.  Unused distribution will be automatically re-invested into the principal. Given in honor of Virgil L. Heskett (BS’35, MS’38 in Education) by Adnelle Harvey (BS’38 in Education), Gene H. Heskett (BS’73 Math & Physical Sciences, MF’74 Business Ad) and Kathleen B. Heskett.

Est. 2012 – ELAINE AND MONICA BUERKEL ALUMNAE HOUSE SCHOLARSHIP FUND #313871, Original Gift $100,000

To be used to award 1 full ASH Housing Scholarship award annually based on the same criteria as current Housing awards. This Fund does not earn interest.
